Savyonne Steindler - Yahel Social Change
LEARN ABOUT OUR PROGRAMSWhen you decide to apply, Masa Israel will match you with one of our eight program sponsors in Israel. Each works within a unique social or community framework, but all promise the chance to make a difference and the support you’ll need to do it.
Tikkun Olam in Tel Aviv – Jaffa
Tikkun Olam in Tel Aviv-Jaffa offers English speaking Jews from around the world between the ages of 21-30 the opportunity to live, study and volunteer in Tel Aviv-Jaffa for 5 or 10 months.
Tikkun Olam is also open to Israeli participants, enabling international participants to get more quickly and naturally absorbed into Israeli society, while giving Israeli participants the chance to live and study alongside members of the global Jewish community.
You’ll begin your Tikkun Olam experience with an orientation period lasting a few weeks, dedicated to Hebrew Ulpan study, getting acclimated to southern Tel Aviv and Jaffa culture, and touring potential volunteering places.
In order to focus your volunteer and study time on the program, you will choose between two volunteer tracks: Social Action and Coexistence.
On the Social Action Track, you’ll live in South Tel Aviv and volunteer with new Israeli immigrants, at-risk Jewish populations, refugees from Darfur and Eritrea, and migrant workers from all over the world.
On the Coexistence Track, you’ll live in one of the diverse neighborhoods of Jaffa and volunteer in organizations that promote Arab-Jewish understanding and coexistence.
In all tracks, your study days will focus on the issues that you’ll encounter in your volunteering, along with classes on Jewish identity and Israeli culture. And you’ll continue your Hebrew language studies throughout the course of the program.
Trips and Tours
You’ll explore Israel, its people and its culture, on overnight trips all over the country, day tours and cultural activities. Overnight trips focus on exposing you to the many different regions of Israel through camping and hiking (for all skill levels). The day trips are an extension of the study program — you’ll get a first-hand view of the issues facing Israeli society by meeting the people who live them each day. Past tours include Israeli Arab villages, West Bank settlements, Bedouin villages and more.
The program housing is in the same neighborhoods as the populations with which you’ll volunteer. You’ll create connections with the populations living around you, and enable yourself to truly become a member of the community.
