Research assistant at a Neuroscience/Neurobiology Memory Lab-Dr. Eitan Okun, Bar Ilan University - Provided by Career Israel

Logo2010BITZUA.indd

The innate immune system has long been thought to solely detect invading pathogens and to initiate the adaptive cellular immune response. Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are innate immune receptors that detect the presence of microbes such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and parasites, but also to detect tissue damage via endogenous ligands. In addition, evidence suggests that TLRs can be activated even in the absence of inflammation or tissue damage.

Our research is focused on finding novel roles for innate immune receptors in the Central Nervous System, and delineating the signaling mechanisms that underlie their roles. So far, our research has identified novel roles for several TLR family members, particularly TLR2, TLR3 and TLR4, in shaping plasticity of the central nervous system.

To name a few of the novel roles we have described:

I. TLR3, widely known for its roles in recognizing double-stranded RNA from viruses, is also a negative regulator of embryonic neuronal stem cells proliferation. Early, but not late, embryonic developmental stages are dependent on TLR3 expression for appropriate proliferation of neuronal stem cells in the developing brain (Okun & Lathia et al., J Neuriscience, 2008).

II. TLR3 constrains adult neurogenesis, the process of generating new neurons, in a specialized sub-region of the adult brain called the Hippocampus. Moreover, TLR3 impairs the ability to perform a short-term memory variant of spatial learning and memory called working memory. Glutamate receptor subunit 1 (GLuR1), a protein critical for this task is enhanced in the absence of TLR3 (Okun et al. PNAS, 2010).

III. Evidence indicates that infections during maternity can have adverse effects to the offspring that can last until many years into adulthood. These adverse effects include neurodegenerative disorders such as schizophrenia. We have shown that TLR2 activation in the developing embryo results in altered neurogenesis rates in the developing brain as well as structural abnormalities of the brain (Okun et al. J Neurochem, 2010).

So far, we have studied the roles of Toll-like receptors (TLRs) mostly using various transgenic mouse strains that are deficient for different TLRs as well as different signaling mediators that are relevant to TLR signaling, such as TRIF, MyD88 and IRF3. We are now utilizing molecular tools such as lentiviruses that either overexpress or down regulate (using short-hairpin RNA) specific TLRs, in order to dissect the roles of TLRs in cognition in a spatial and temporal manner within the central nervous system, while avoiding possible developmental effects.

Using stereotaxic methods, these viruses are then injected into various brain regions such as the hippocampus or the amygdala, and the mice are then tested in various behavioral tasks. In parallel, we plan on using these viruses to study the molecular mechanism for the observed effects of TLRs on neuronal plasticity.

Studying the functionality and mechanism of action of different TLRs in the brain is the basis for our understanding of the role of TLRs in pathological conditions of the central nervous systems, but also our understanding of mild cognitive decline in aging population.

Job Description of Trainee:neuroscience/psychology/biology student, research experience, willingness to be involved with animal research (lab mice)

Lab assistant, synthesis of innovative nanostructures with Dr. Nessim, Bar Ilan University - Provided by Career Israel

Logo2010BITZUA.indd

Carbon nanostructured materials such as carbon nanotubes, carbon nanofibers, and graphene are prime candidates of new battery and supercapacitor elements that can massively improve battery efficiency for energy conversion and storage. Such devices have the potential to provide extremely high surface per unit volume of catalytically active sites, making a three to fivefold improvement in energy density possible.

Despite attempts to combine carbon nanostructures with active electrode materials, the mechanisms of carbon nanostructure growth are still not fully explained, and critical issues remain:

1) energy density is far below the theoretical level,

2) cyclability is limited, and

3) most synthesis techniques work in the lab but are impractical for industrial production.

The goal of the Nessim lab is to study the scientific mechanisms of the synthesis of nanostructures and to develop relevant industrial applications, with a prime emphasis on energy devices (batteries and supercapacitors). The group currently comprises two postdocs, two PhD candidates, a Masters student, and two visiting summer students. Additionally, the group collaborates with researchers in BIU (e.g., Aurbach and Lellouche groups) and with researchers in the USA (MIT, U.Michigan, Vanderbilt) and Europe (ETH).

We plan to study in-situ, simultaneous synthesis and functionalization of carbon nanostructures primarily by chemical vapor deposition. Because this way the growth of the carbon nanostructures and their functionalization with active electrode material will happen at the same time, the method has the potential to synthesise ultra-dense composite structures, maximizing energy density while maintaining structural integrity and high cyclability.

These studies will uncover many scientific aspects of carbon nanostructure nucleation, growth, and functionalization. Multiple material combinations corresponding to selected battery and supercapacitor chemistries will be synthesized and electrochemically tested.

Customized, industrially-scalable plasma-enhanced CVD synthesis equipment will be used to synthesize the electrodes. The learning of mechanisms and factors affecting simultaneous carbon nanostructure growth and functionalization is critical for nanotechnology. Success in this research will allow the development of ultra-high energy density batteries and supercapacitors that will make the electric car a manufacturing reality with great consequences to the environment and society.

Job Description of Trainee:

Depends on the background of the relevant person. The lab works with nanomaterials, using high-powered furnaces to synthesize materials. The intern will learn how to operate these furnaces, eventually being able to do so independently, and will then be able to join more advanced researchers in examining the product of the synthesis through high-powered microscopes.

Training required: Must feel comfortable around lab equipment and be a quick learner. They will train in how to use the machinery, but the intern should have the right head for it.

Experience Required: Some experience in material science/nanotech/chemistry appreciated.

Research Assistant -Physical Therapy – Jason Friedman, Tel Aviv University - Provided by Career Israel

TAU

The project  would be suitable for you is related to the nine hole peg test (9HPT). This is a test commonly used by occupational therapists and physical therapists as a measure of hand function and coordination.

While the test is usually performed with a stopwatch (i.e. how long it takes them to put the nine pegs in the 9 holes), we are building a version that will provide additional information through sensors embedded in the device, as well as using motion capture to record movements of the fingers.

The goal of the project will be to validate our version of the 9HPT (compared to the standard version), and to run some pilot experiments to see if we are able to get more useful information with the additional sensors & motion capture. One of my M.Sc students is planning to use the device later this year with children with CP, so this testing beforehand will be important to ensure this is a valid measurement device.

The intern is partnered with one of the museum departments using the database. A curator then guides the intern on the individual needs and methods employed by the department in cataloguing their collection. The collection database team continues to support the intern through his/her stay. Interns are trained in scanning, database entry, working in curatorial and the Chief Registrar’s departments. They have direct contact with the curators, learn how to work as a team with curators of the various departments in the Museum, as well as become ‘self-starters’ using their newly achieved skills to also work independently, and most of all contribute to the great task at hand-digitizing all the while gaining marketable skills for the future.
