Biomedical Engineering Internship, MobileODT - Provided by Career Israel

alt="mobile odt"MobileOCT will increase the effectiveness and efficiency of cervical screening by utilizing the significant advances in optical engineering and mobile computing of the past decade to provide clinicians with increased information through a colposcope familiar and comparable to existing technology.

MobileOCT’s proprietary colposcopy method will add a significant layer of specificity to colposcopy’s sensitivity through a multi-modal optical approach that will not increase the cost of the device. By building into the colposcope the capabilities of polarized light imaging and spectroscopy, the clinician will be able to overlay the image they are already trained to analyze with additional information, better identifying areas of interest, and better enabling them to discern between abnormalities and optical distortions.

Then, using the capabilities of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) the clinician will use low-coherence interferometry to image a sample cross-section below the tissue surface – providing a critical third dimension, which can better indicate whether to refer to biopsy. Finally, using the same technology most clinicians are used to using in their tablets and smartphones, clinicians will be able to refer to an atlas of images and compare their images to others, increasing their certainty of diagnosis.

Job Description of Trainee:

Supporting the CTO with research into biomedical implications of the technology; reviewing advances in the space and their relevance to MobileOCT’s efforts; Exploring additional possible directions for applying our technology.

Training required:

Compiling a knowledge-base on cervical cancer and cervical cancer screening technologies, and their core characteristics; provide a high level literature review that can be shared with investors and partners.

Research Assistant -Physical Therapy – Jason Friedman, Tel Aviv University - Provided by Career Israel

TAU

The project  would be suitable for you is related to the nine hole peg test (9HPT). This is a test commonly used by occupational therapists and physical therapists as a measure of hand function and coordination.

While the test is usually performed with a stopwatch (i.e. how long it takes them to put the nine pegs in the 9 holes), we are building a version that will provide additional information through sensors embedded in the device, as well as using motion capture to record movements of the fingers.

The goal of the project will be to validate our version of the 9HPT (compared to the standard version), and to run some pilot experiments to see if we are able to get more useful information with the additional sensors & motion capture. One of my M.Sc students is planning to use the device later this year with children with CP, so this testing beforehand will be important to ensure this is a valid measurement device.
